Launching the Estate Retrofit Toolkit

The Estate Retrofit Toolkit launched to industry on Thursday 9th July – a free tool designed to help local authorities and public sector estate managers in Scotland make informed decisions about decarbonising non-domestic building portfolios.

Jointly funded by the Passivhaus Trust, Hub East Central Scotland, and the City of Edinburgh Council, the toolkit was designed by Perform+, the consultancy arm of Architype. It has been developed in Excel to fit naturally into existing data workflows, with costing input from Currie & Brown and peer review from NARRO and Harley Haddow.

The tool requires minimal inputs and produces clear, actionable outputs:

  • Operational energy, cost and carbon figures
  • Indicative construction costs through to 2045
  • Suggested retrofit pathways based on building type and condition

A short set of questions groups buildings into pathways, making it easier to decide where to invest, how far to go, and when to act. The toolkit has already been tested with a number of local authorities and is ready to use now.

The launch session included a live walkthrough of the tool and early learning from its development. The team is also inviting interest from organisations in England and Wales to help shape future versions. Get in touch to find out more.
